Officer punches suspect after tussle, high-speed chase

(UPDATED WITH VIDEO) Sandusky police’s very own “Pitbull” punched a suspect in the face Friday in the 1300 block of Franklin St. to end a foot chase, according to a report.

“They call me the pitbull around here,” Sandusky police Officer Sean Orman can be heard saying to suspect Juan Recio Jr. on cruiser video.

“Well you sure bit the (expletive) out of me,” Recio replies.

“No hard feelings. I just couldn’t see what you had in your hands,” Orman then says. “I got to do, what I got to do.”

After reading the report and watching the video on Tuesday, Sandusky police Chief Jim Lang said he’s setting up a meeting with Sandusky police Officer Sean Orman and Sandusky police assistant Chief John Orzech today to discuss the action.

“This is not our normal procedure to strike someone with your hand or fist,” Lang said. “That’s not a good practice.”

What would George Zimmerman do???

Im just saying... the guy in the back of the police cruiser that officer Orman sniffed out looks to be an African American, if you noticed the paper from the other day, there were two suspects, one white and one black. The guy in the back of Ormans car is not Recio, the guy whos face was on the front page of the paper....am I the only one who noticed this? Good one Register! You owe that officer an apology!!

czechurself

Gunner, the guy in the cruiser is Donte Dunston then and he was a passenger in the car if you read the report that Orman wrote. Orman reported he hit Reico in the face. My question is did Orman misidentify the men or did both men take a hit to the face?

TuffNutts2011

Nice Work Officer Orman. Those junkies could have killed someone. Get them to the jail where they belong. Keep up the good work. The citizens of this city will have your back.

wiredmama222

Oh, NOW we hear something from LANG? Wow, did we hear from him the entire time this thing with the murder was going on? Not one word. We heard from his lt. But have an officer questioned for doing his job and wow....he speaks! And in the negative. How about that for backing your boys!!! Yeah, right! Listen, the SR had that girl on BTL when NO ONE could question her and I had a FIT. That is why I went on BTL. Westerhold and I got into it over that one. I defended the police then and I am now. Orman is a real cop. He is after the bad guys. Shame on the SR again. Don't diss them out for doing their jobs and DON"T make them look like a bunch of bad guys when they are out GETTING the bad guys.

The City of Sandusky needs more cops like this one. They need guys who will NOT take any more "stuff" from these thugs who think they run this town. Its time they knew that STOP means STOP not maybe stop.

These two idiots ran their car, then on foot and kept going. So this thug got punched. Who cares what the thug got from this cop. He's lucky it wasn't a bullet. Darn lucky. Just like that little mouth thing was lucky she didn't get a punch to the face the nigh she got arrested. It's time the mouthy and the runners learned you cannot DISRESPECT THE COPS.

When that lesson is learned this town will get back to being less threatened and less in fear for its safety. If it takes a few punches in the face to a few thugs......so be it.

If Ms Ard and the Chief of police can't stand up for their officers on this, then replace the both of THEM. And the NAACP can just live with it. Perhaps they need to understand that as well. Let THEM teach the word STOP to their people and stop crying foul so loudly. Because you know that is what they fear... I don't.

ReallyGood

Well said. He is an amazing police officer and he should be praised. We need more cops like him. I feel very safe knowing he is SPD

wiredmama222

Thanks. I have a real problem with the SR dissing out the cops all the time. This time it goes a little too far and if the Chief and Ms Ard do anything to him they may have a problem at the office with protestors as the city is getting sick of it too.
FINALLY an officer stands up to the thugs and its a put down by the chief? Oh, come on now. That is just bull feathers.

safecracker2

Well said, mama. The SR is so one-sided when it comes to the police. Ask around town, many people will tell you they only believe half of what the SR reports. On that note, if the cops were wrong, then they are wrong. But if they're right, they're right. If these "alleged" criminals were threatening my family, or putting them in harms way, then I expect the cops to take whatever force is necessary to put it to an end based on the circumstance. Mr. Lang, please come out from behind your desk. The type of criminals and crimes have changed drastically. I only hope that the next Chief they choose up for the challenge.

wiredmama222

Thanks. I am sick of seeing them getting kicks and slapped all the time. For once we need to applaud them. As for Orman...nice work, fella.

So, since the video shows Donte Dunston in the cruiser- I am confused. Did Officer Orman write the wrong info in his official report or did both men take a hit to the face? The report says he hit the driver, Juan Reico, but in the audio he can be heard telling Donte that he had to hit him because he couldnt see his hands and Dunston acknowledges he was hit hard.

ReallyGood

I hope Officer Orman knows that more people are supporting him rather than against him. He is actually one of the best officers SPD has. I would trust him with my life and if there was ever a moment where quick thinking and fast action was needed...Officer Orman would make the best judgement call. Best of luck to you Sean! YOU are a hero!

myopinion34

Way to go sean! Im glad there r so many readers showing their support for this officer! What alot people do not understand is that it IS life or death when working the streets and protecting and serving the citizens....another thing that is probably hard to comprehend unless one has been in these pursuits and "scuffles" is the amount of adrenaline that is racing thru ur body and not knowing if ur going to be ambushed and/or shot....esp when there is more than one suspect involved. In my opinion, this officer did an amazing job pursuing and apprehending the suspect(s). Kudos to u, Orman! Keep up the good work!

OnlyfoolsAssume

Orman only struck Juan Recio according to his report. That is not Recio in his car. As you can hear on the video Orman said I smelled you cause of your cologne thats why they call me the pitbull because I can sniff people out. And the guy in the back says you sure sniffed me out. The article is entirely wrong. Good job SR for completely jacking that up.

OnlyfoolsAssume

Czech, Orman did not misidentify anyone the SR screwed up and somehow confused Donte for Jaun...they are brilliant

ReallyGood

Whaaaaaaaaaat?????? The SR printed inaccurate information? Say it ain't so?!

wiredmama222

Oh, that figures....wrong guy with the sound bite Good job SR, try to get your sound bite and photo together...YOU HAVE THE WRONG GUY WITH THE WRONG SOUND>>>>>FIX IT.

ReallyGood

Quick question...do we know why the guy lead Officer Orman on a chase? Drugs? Weapons? Warrants? Does he have a lengthy criminal history?? Anything with assualt on a police officer before this? Or known weapons charges??

Julie R.

I can see why a cop would get angry about some of these low-lifes out there but the fact of the matter is --- a cop can not hit anybody. Take for example the guy that got kicked in the head for leading police on a high-speed chase on the wrong side of the highway. I would have been tempted to kick the idiot in the head, too, but had that guy died from the kick in the head, guess what?

czechurself

The report that Orman wrote himself says that he hit the driver (and later identified him as Reico). The audio states that Orman took some type of action against the passenger, Dunston, because he couldn't see what was in his hands. SR may have misidentified the man in the video, but were both men hit?

OnlyfoolsAssume

No the passenger was hiding in a yard he came out willingly

Anyone else notice the two races involved here? The man Orman punched is NOT the man in this car. Listen to the tape, he is talking about being a pitbull because he can SMELL. Sandusky Register should be ASHAMED for publishing an article like this. Lets check here, who broke the law? And the tussle, anyone else notice that Orman and Juan come into the video already fighting? Any possibility they were fighting BEFORE the cruiser with the camera pulled up? I'd like to thank EVERY officer in both of these videos for doing a job most wouldn't.

Wasn't it reported that the police saw then throw "white balls" from the car window during the pursuate? Gee, wonder if they thought the cops might find those and hold them reponsible for them should they get caught. I wonder how many phone calls they made during the persuate to have them picked up by their friends before the cops could find them? Just saying.

Hello
IMO all officers should have with them a dog.... I bet the guys that run will stop and think before they do it again when a real pit bull is on their a$$...I have one that will do the job with just a command

seenocolor

IMO I think all officers of the law should have a dog with them. I think someone running from the police would think twice if they knew a real pit bull was running after their a$$. I have one that will give a good chase with just a command....

Kim Nuesse has to be thanking God every second of the day that she's out of the city of Sandusky. I'll bet if the truth were known, Chief Lang is counting down the days until he's out of there, too.

Julie R.

Some of you commenters on here are a joke. You applaud the SPD for roughing up a couple of thugs --- like that is really going to solve all the problems in Sandusky or something --- yet you ignore the fact that the SPD, the sheriff's department and the prosecutor's office all dropped the ball big time when it came to Curtis Clinton.

jes1413

@Julie R. Just a little clue on how things work, the officers don't get to choose when a person who has committed rape is arrested and charged. In this case, the officers didn't drop the ball, those pressing charges did. I imagine chief Lang gets to help make that call. These officers did a terrific job. What they did is not going to solve all the problems Sandusky has, but it stopped Sandusky from adding a "drunk man kills women on her way to work while driving recklessly" to its record.

Julie R.

Sorry, but I still think they ALL dropped the ball when it came to Clinton.
