SANDUSKY

Can't make it to Washington for the inauguration?

Maybe you can show up for the local celebration instead.

The Erie County Democratic Party will host an Inauguration Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Sandusky State Theatre, 107 Columbus Ave.

"We invite the community to join us on this historic day as we celebrate the inauguration of our 44th president of the United States," said Amy F. Grubbe, chairwoman of the Erie County Democratic Party.

"I am very excited to be participating in an event like this -- a great cause for celebration not only for Democrats, but hopefully for the entire nation," said Linda Miller-Moore, a local Democrat volunteering her time for the event.

"I personally think it's wonderful to have a local celebration," said Sherry Wertz, a local Obama supporter who was hospitalized the day of the election but arranged to vote using an emergency ballot. Wertz said the improvement in race relations in the U.S. in the last few decades has been amazing.

"I literally cried when I saw that he had made 59 percent in the primary in South Carolina. I had lived in those exact counties, and I had lived in those towns where it would have been absolutely impossible 30 years ago for anything like that to have happened," she said.

Lunch at the Sandusky celebration will include a grilled chicken wrap, tomato basil soup with tortellini, salad and assorted mini desserts, with a cash bar for wine, beer and sodas. A60-inch TV screen will be set up to show inauguration events and Barack Obama's speech.

Tickets are $15, and supply is limited because of space. For more information or to buy tickets, call Jim Murray at 419-624-3129, Miller-Moore at 419-684-5833 or Grubbe at 419-433-3917.

Grubbe said the event was put together in response to popular demand.

"Many people contacted the party expressing interest in a day event to witness the inauguration and speech of President Obama. The party decided to open this event to the entire community for a minimal charge to cover basic expenses. We are hopeful the community will turn out for this historic event as it did for the November election," she said.
