SANDUSKY

The extreme cold in Erie County on Friday was hard on man and beast.

The overnight Thursday-Friday low in Cleveland was 13 below zero, according to the National Weather Service, with similar temperatures recorded across northern Ohio.

Many schools canceled classes and activities to keep children out of the frigid air. Charitable organizations who help the homeless saw an influx of people and families looking for warm places to stay. And animal welfare agencies expressed concern for pets and strays.
