From January 2011 to August 2012, Sandusky firefighters branded 35 blazes as arson, with a collective damage estimate at $33,600, according to a Register analysis of data obtained through a public records request.
Fewer than 200 fires occurred in Sandusky within the period studied, and arson ranked as the second-leading cause.
Unintentional fires topped the list with 87, or roughly 45 percent of the total.
The number of arson incidents is actually quite low considering Sandusky’s dynamics and demographics, Sandusky fire Chief Paul Ricci said.
Among the frightening factors: There are about 100 abandoned buildings scattered throughout the city, and they’re perfect havens for vagrants and other criminal action, such as someone purposely torching a structure.
