Unemployment rates rose in more than half of U.S. states last month, the latest evidence that hiring remains tepid across the country.

The Labor Department said Friday that rates increased in 26 states. They fell in 12 states and were unchanged in the other 12.

Unemployment also rose in seven of the 11 key swing states in this year's presidential election.

Nationwide, employers added only 96,000 jobs in August. That's below July's gain of 141,000 and the average of 226,000 jobs a month added in the January-March quarter.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent last month from 8.3 percent in July. But that was only because many people gave up looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively searching for jobs.

In August, unemployment increased in several competitive states in this year's presidential race.

The rate in Michigan rose to 9.4 percent from 9 percent. The rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 12.1 percent in Nevada, which has the highest unemployment in the nation. GOP nominee Mitt Romney campaigned in Nevada on Friday.

Unemployment rates also rose in five other battleground states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa.

Still, unemployment was flat in three closely contested states that are rich in electoral votes: Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

The rate in Florida held steady at 8.8 percent. Florida also recorded the second-highest job gain in the nation last month, adding 23,200 jobs.

Ohio's rate stayed at 7.2 percent, and unemployment in Virginia was unchanged at 5.9 percent. Both rates also stayed well below the national average, as did the rates in Iowa (5.5 percent), New Hampshire (5.7 percent) and Wisconsin (7.5 percent).

Colorado was the only swing state to see a decline in unemployment in August. The rate fell to 8.2 percent from 8.3 percent in July.

Recent polls have shown President Barack Obama with a big lead in Pennsylvania, and also ahead of Romney in Virginia and Iowa.

That makes Florida and Ohio critical to Romney's chances of winning the election. Romney is launching a three-day Ohio bus tour Monday and will campaign in Colorado on Sunday.

Obama was scheduled to campaign in Virginia on Friday.

Good news for OH:

"Over the year, 27 states experienced statistically significant changes in employment, 26
of which were increases. The largest increase occurred in California (+298,700), followed
by Texas (+259,500), New York (+121,900), and Ohio (+98,300)."

Unemployment always ticks up this of year and you brainiacs should know this.  No President is going to just make jobs fall from the sky.  Anyone expecting a complete turnaround in 3+ years is sorely lacking in knowledge.

Randy_Marsh

WHAT???? I thought when Obama got elected the oceans would still thier rise, The sun would cool, He would give "Bama" money to everyone to pay off thier brand new porche and he would defeat the evildoers single handedly???? Boy did you get fooled.

"That's exactly right. And a year from now I think people are going to see that we're starting to make some progress, but there's still going to be some pain out there. If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition" B. Obama

Didnt YOU believe him? Oh he must be "Sorely lacking"

@ deertracker:

Presidents Reagan, Clinton and GW Bush increased employment within 3 + yrs. with the recessions that they "inherited."

Face it, the guy's just incompetent.

@ dog,

Sure thing puppy, as soon as you tell all the union hacks to stop investing pension money in Bain and all the other evil corporations you hate so much.

8ballinthesidepocket

Big Dog -  Why don't you tell us what jobs he sent to China?  I would like to know what companies did this and how many per company and the exact job classification too.  You guys shoot off your mouths about something you heard on msnbc but don't have any of the specifics or facts.

Re":  Deertracker:  oh really?  Look what Reagon did after that joke of a president Jimmy "peanut head" Carter.  You should  state facts not more of this liberal drivel.  Obama says he has plan, well what the hell is he waiting for?

Of COURSE we'll vote for Obama again. If Romney is elected,  we will no longer be able to claim mortgage interest and tuition credit on our federal taxes. For my Middle class family, $2000+ instantly disappears from our bottom line this year. And all so that Mitt can provide BIGGER tax breaks to millionaires. Under Obama we have added 4.5 million jobs. At the end of the last Republican president's term we were losing 800,000 jobs a MONTH. While Romney was governor of Massachusetts, it ranked 47th in job creation and the state's debt rose to the highest level per person in the nation. Romney's "plan" is the same one that created the recession.

Here's all you need to know about Romney. John McCain thought that the clueless Sarah Palin was more qualified to be VP than Mitt...

Fed Chairman Bernanke said that the Fed Resv. was responsible for 2 million.

2.5 million jobs in 3 + yrs.  is nothing to brag about.

Pres. Obama "fixing" the mess? The man is clueless.

The Fed Reserve through money printing is temporarily keeping this economy on life support.

Contango: for a more accurate example of incompetent, see: Bush, George W.   The man took a budget surplus and turned it into a multi-trillion dollar deficit. How did he do it? He got us into two wars with no plan as to how to fund them, and topped it off by cutting taxes (revenue). In summary, he greatly increased spending while cutting incoming revenue and brought the country  its worst economic disaster since the 1930's. Of course, I've only mentioned his economic failings. Shall we discuss his inept foreign policy, or his apparent lack of grasp with the English language? Nearly four years later, Obama is STILL fixing the huge mess Bush left us in.

Between 2001 and 2010, 2.8 million U.S. jobs were lost or displaced to China.

Romney thinks they should borrow money from their parents and start a business.

How's that trickle down working out for them??

Seen it All

Ok folks, I'm neither (D) nor (R).. I'm the ONE in the middle with a brain who thinks for themselves!  I NEVER vote D/R because that is what is WRONG with our congress .. etc... NO ONE will cross the isle (unless they are paid enough) !!!!

If I had my way.. I would have a D..NONE OF THE ABOVE to hit on my ballot this year!  Then the dems and repubs would have 2 more months to put someone else on their ballots.  ALL this HOOPLA.. negative ads.. is a tiring, boring trip for me these days!

But I DO remember HOW the economy was when Bush II took over.   And I think if McCain got in.. we would still be in a downward spiral!  I was NEVER happy about George Jr starting a second war, when he didn't even finish the first one!  But, hey.. stats show.. presidents are ALWAYS re-elected during WAR time, there's his motive.(since he couldn't get Bin Laden) or just trying to finish what his father started.. I'm NOT sure???

If I had my way, Hillary would of been running the country the past few yrs!  I thought she did an awesome job while her hubs was getting BJ's in the oval office!  :)

How will I vote in Nov.. I have NO idea.. but I will keep  "coasterfans" thoughts in mind....

"Here's all you need to know about Romney. John McCain thought that the clueless Sarah Palin was more qualified to be VP than Mitt..."

And wow......THAT stupid woman got on my last nerve!  Being "cute" might get you a BIG job in Alaska with what.. 80% men who spend too much time on the fishing boats.. It DON'T fly in the real world Sarah :)

So if ANYONE has anything INTERESTING to tell me.... besides what is spouted on Fox news.. as I get that update daily from hubs.. PLEASE chime in :)

If this wasn't so disgusting it would be funny.

All these liberal crybabies blaming GWB and everybody else for all of our troubles still.... LOL

Ovomit has NO accountability for any thing it's everybody elses fault... blah,  blah,   blah.

Looking ahead 4 years if Ovomit were to get elected again he will still blame all of the previous administrations for his MAJOR screw ups. Only because he can do no wrong he is the socialist messiah.

I'll ask again:

Why do public employee pension plans like Calpers invest tens of billions of dollars in hedge funds and private equity firms like Bain Capital?

Why do public employee pension plans like PERS and SERS invest tens of billions of dollars in foreign companies?

Here's even an article to help get ya started:

Romney has played no part in Sensata Technologies Inc.'s decision to move its auto-sensor business to China. But he owns millions of dollars worth of Bain funds that hold a controlling stake in the Massachusetts-based company.

The plant's employees are calling on Romney to use his influence with former Bain colleagues to keep the plant open.

The workers signed a petition asking him to help, and the Freeport City Council passed a motion on Monday urging the candidate to step in to save the jobs.

"If he wanted to, all he needs to do is call up the management of Bain Capital and say, 'Look, don't do this,'" said Tom Gaulrapp, who has worked at the factory for 33 years.

I know where there are manufacturing jobs available in Erie County. It's hard work. It's entry level pay but opportunity to advance with hard work and a little smarts. People just don't want to work.
