Huron County residents will remember 2008 as full of hardships.
Many jobs were lost and families had to make difficult decisions such as whether to pay the rent or pay health insurance premiums. And not a week went by without clusters of home foreclosures.
The hard knocks varied from city to city, village to village, but nearly everywhere there was a common thread -- the troubles resulted from or were worsened by the deteriorating economy.
As Huron County officials look back on 2008 and all the challenges it contained, they have trouble holding out much hope that 2009 will be much better.
But just the same, they are crossing their fingers that 2009 won't be as bad as some people are predicting.
