FREMONT

Though poor sales tax income and investment returns forced a $1.2 million deficit going into 2009, Sandusky County was able to avoid employee lay-offs in the 2009 budget.

Sandusky County Commissioners approved the $16.9 million budget today. They said they took a scalpel to department requests and cut back on their own projects to reconcile the shortfall.

If the economy continues a downward trend, the commissioners said it may become harder to retain personnel.
