Erie County wants cigarette smokers to keep their dirty butts off the ground.

Armed with a $1,500 grant from Keep America Beautiful, officials in the Erie County Solid Waste District launched a program to reduce cigarette-butt litter at the Huron Boat Basin.

Tina Sevenbergen, education specialist for the Solid Waste District, said she hopes cigarette smokers puffing away in other areas of Erie County will think twice before tossing cigarette butts out of their car windows or near doorways.

Pocket ashtrays are available for smokers who want to avoid cigarette litter. They can be picked up at the Huron Parks and Recreation Office or by calling Tina Sevenbergen at 419-433-7303, ext. 249.
