Dunn's father: Outcome is best for family, community

Matt Dunn would have liked nothing more than to see his son's killer handed the death penalty.

Matt Dunn would have liked nothing more than to see his son's killer handed the death penalty.

But after sitting through a day-long hearing in the case Thursday, he agreed with his other family members.

It was time to give prosecutors the go-ahead to cash in their greatest bargaining chip.

With Erie County prosecutor Kevin Baxter agreeing to dismiss the death penalty, Kevin Randleman on Friday agreed to plead guilty to aggravated murder in the death of Sandusky police Officer Andrew Dunn.

The arrangement effectively spared the Dunn family months of anguish, as they'd been awaiting the start of Randleman's trial in October.

Immediately after Randleman's guilty plea, Erie County Common Pleas Court Judge Tygh Tone sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

"It's a relief. It's good for us. It's good for the community," Matt told the Register after the hearing. "It's not the outcome I wanted personally, but it's what's best for the whole big picture. It took a lot of convincing from them."

What I think I read was the defense offered up this plea deal a month ago and obviosusly Matt was holding out for the death penalty, and he then finally said to go ahead and accept it.

I take it " them" is the rest of the family.

has anyone heard the saying : "talking out of both sides of your mouth".........................?

KnuckleDragger

@ritt, I'm sure deertracker has heard of it, or at least he should have since he does it frequently :)

deertracker

Try looking up the word "comprehension".  We all know who the liar is!

KnuckleDragger

Which definition deertracker the actual definition which is  perception or understanding, or the bleeding heart definition that seems to define comprehension as however an individual "FEELS" something to be.

My perception is that you were at least mildly supporting the notion that Randleman wasn't guilty.  That is the way I "FEEL."  I am also able to comprehend that you usually talk out of both sides of your mouth.  Try rereading some of your past posts.  Honestly, I had a bit more respect for your opinions than I do now.

As someone who was working in the ER that night and was part of the Trauma team that worked hard in an attempt to save him, of course I am going to take offense to someone whose posts lead me to believe that they think Randleman may have been justified in taking that young mans life.  Regardless of whether you think he is mentally challenged or not.  Are you able to COMPREHEND that?

Super Judge

WAIT A MINUTE! You work at the ER too? I was off that night but this means we know each other!

LabMan

I have to agree with Knuckle. Deertracker comes on here and it appears he is playing devils advocate, and that is fine, but then when Randleman himself pleads guilty he still feels there is more to the story. Do you think his lawyers would let him roll over if that video did not prove he started and finished the confrontation? You are no different than Traci except you do not put it in print.

Super you are just a jerk.I would l love to have the pizza party and meet you.

Super Judge

Any time you like, the pizza is on me. I think we should all meet up sometime. Whats wrong with that?

Why wont they release the tapes? If it was a officer who shot and killed someone the tapes would be released. I just looked at footage of officers killing someone today on yahoo. Why is it different because this officer lost a gun battle? what makes it different?

Wait i remember he was a "hero" because he was out saving us from the criminals with no lights.

ritt

Agree with Labman and knuckle guy.

For you Ned ~ just what exactly would releasing the tapes accomplish????   Said it before, will say it again.  The court system has a responsibility to carry out the law........not a responsibility to fullfill your morbid curiosity or the curiosities of those like you.  How would you feel if it was your son?  Dad? family member??  Oh wait......it was a simple gun battle......and your Dad lost.....stupid me.  Far worst things could happen you know.

Super Judge

I don't give a fudge brownie how any of you feel.  It is not my fault if you have no real comprehension skills.  I never once defended Randleman's action and challenge any of you "bleeding hearts" to quote me where I did.  There is more to the story and call it a morbid curiosity if you want but I just want to know what happened out there.  That in no way suggests Andy did anything wrong.  You guys want to silence those that may not be as dismissive as you. Yes, I like crime stories and murder mysteries but I am and always have been a law abiding citizen and just like you I have first amendment rights.  Don't be naive, his lawyers were paid by taxpayers and they did the best they could do under the circumstances but it's the people they really defend.  Don't get it twisted!  This all could have been settled months ago with the exact same outcome.  Why the resolution all of a sudden?  Everyone expected this guy to go to prison, yes, even the black community, but it does not mean a person cannot ask a question. My GUESS is Tone called them in his office and told them to get on with settling this case.  Tone is a good man and a fair one.  Yes, I know him.  You can equate me with Traci all you want but YOU DO NOT KNOW ME and if I felt the same as she I would put it in print.  I said what I said and I stand by it.  If you don't like it........oh well!  All you did that night Knuckle was your job, it is your employer that owes you, not me.  The only timeI ever used the word "justify" or "justification" is when I said there is no justification for shooting any law enforcement officer.  Have one of your kids read this to you if you can't comprehend what is written above!

Well said

I THINK RELEASING THE TAPES WOULD ELIMINATE A DOUBLE STANDARD. POLICE DEPARTMENTS HAVE NO PROBLEM SHOWING TAPES OF WHEN THEY GUN SOMEONE DOWN. VIDEO FOOTAGE OF POLICE SHOOTING A MAN IN NEW YORK WAS ONLINE THE NEXT DAY. THE CASE I'M REFERING TO IS WHEN BOTH OFFICERS UNLOADED THEIR MAGAZINES AND HIT NINE CIVILANS WITH THEIR CARELESS SHOOTING.
