AMHERST TWP.

The Middle Ridge Service Plaza off the Ohio Turnpike was closed down Thursday evening after workers there spotted a suspicious suitcase.

The airline carry-on style bag was located standing upright at fuel pumps at the plaza and had an antenna-like object coming from an unzipped pocket.

Police and the Lorain County Bomb Squad were called to the plaza at about 7:30 p.m. and a 500-foot radius was evacuated immediately. The bomb squad secured the suitcase by way of a remote control robot, and the contents of the bag were found to be medical supplies not posing any threat to the public.

The plaza, which includes fueling and fast-food restaurants, was re-opened about 10 p.m.
