SANDUSKY

A man accused of whipping a 5-year-old girl with a belt faces child endangering and assault charges.

The girl's mother called police Sunday night to report the incident, police said.

Officers who responded to the 2100 block of Aspen Run found welts and red marks on the girl's backside, indicating "numerous strikes" that were "without doubt excessive," police said.

Police arrested Mario V. Bates, 26, 1000 block Hancock St., and charged him with child endangering and assault.

The girl's mother told police Bates was her off-again on-again boyfriend.

Bates, who refused to discuss the incident with a police officer, was later released on a recognizance bond.

Police informed Erie County Children's Services of the incident.

Bates pleaded not guilty Monday in Sandusky Municipal Court.

The case is set for trial Nov. 13, a court spokeswoman said.
