VERMILION

After months of contentious negotiations, the Vermilion school board sealed the deal on a new teachers' contract Wednesday night.

Both sides met with a federal mediator for seven hours Sunday to hammer out the deal, narrowly averting a strike that was set for Tuesday. The union voted to approve the contract Monday.

The board met for an hour in executive session Wednesday before voting on the contract.
