Thumbs UP for the kind of honor that gives forward: Dr. John Bock of Columbus, like many, was moved by the simple heroism of Chuck Herndon after a plane crash killed all but one family member in Lake Erie off Herndon's Kelleys Island home. Bock, a friend of Herndon's father, established an art scholarship at Columbus College of Art and Design, where Herndon taught before retiring to the island. Thumbs UP for learning at a distance; the TV link between Port Clinton High School and BGSU Firelands is but the latest example of a cost-effective way to make a variety of learning experiences available to students seeking challenges beyond their years -- without straining the resources of any one school that's trying to be all things to all people.

Thumbs UP to the Melon Festival, which just concluded its 50th year representing Milan to the rest of the state and the region. Congratulations to the festival, and queen Heather Johnson and her court.

Thumbs UP to Erie County Sheriff's deputies for not flinching away from their duty to prosecute a drunken-driving case -- even when the accused is a member of the badged brotherhood, in this case, a part-time Perkins police officer accused of trying to start a fight at a Huron home; Bryant R. Halsey's court date is Oct. 3. And thumbs DOWN that it's ever necessary.
