The Mailbag: How about a hotel conference center at the old ConAgra site?

Q: Now that the ConAgra building is gone, what does Huron plan to do with that river-front property? Have they considered a hotel and conference center? — Joe in Huron Twp.

A: Huron officials actually have a master plan for the city, including the former ConAgra property, that defines much of the anticipated growth in the area. Among the considerations in the plan is public space, the design of the streets, and yes, retail and commercial opportunities. Right now it seems the steering committee is looking at mixed use development in public and private partnerships. That means combining a good mix of retail, residential and recreational space in that high-profile waterfront area. Exactly what that looks like will depend on what developers envision there — but it certainly could include a hotel and conference center. Given the work already done on the master plan, you can rest assured that the Huron residents and officials involved in the process will closely consider any development proposals that are brought to the table. The master plan is posted below for you to browse. We apologize for the inconvenience of its upside-down pages — that's how we received the document.

Ah yes, a Hotel/Conference Center on the water, by a stone/ore mill and railroad tracks. Great idea! I am all about increasing tourism/recreation space and getting people here, but that is NOT a good site for it. Greenspace and maybe a shopping area, maybe.

@bnjjad, the last thing we need more of along the lakefront is more non-tax producing greenspace.  A mixed use development with housing, shopping, entertainment venues, and a marina sounds good.  Sort of like a mini-flats.

Dont think I would want to live near that mill and waterway with the big boats coming in all the time and unloading. I agree, we dont need more greenspace along the waterfront, but that property is going to be hard to fill. at most i see a Shopping/entertainment area like you mentioned, although there already is an ampitheater across the river.

Pretty sure we already have a hotel conference center on the water in Huron, and its in trouble.   Sawmill Creek.

Lets do something that will put people to work with decent paying jobs.  Gee, like maybe manufacturing something.

Ah yes a mixed retail development!

Get it built quick because Huron needs more abandond retail store fronts.

To speed things up they could give our modern super heros, small biz owners, lots of free loans, matching funds, and tax abatements!

Didn't Bain Capital drive ConAgra out of biznuss?
