SANDUSKY

A nudge from heavy equipment Thursday marked the beginning of the end for a former Sandusky winery and farm market that served the public for decades.

However, an adjacent barn dating to 1895 has gotten a reprieve.

Workers with Hula Construction of Castalia began knocking down the approximately 9,000-square-foot Steuk Farm Market after the city declared it unsafe and unsightly. The building at 1001 Fremont Ave. has been vacant for at least 15 years and now houses only broken glass, old fixtures and a tangle of vines, job foreman David Sharp said.
