Integrity was the driving force in keeping Jim Gunner at Perkins.

"I tell my children when you make a promise or a commitment, you live up to it," he said Friday.

"If I'm going to preach that to my kids, then I need to live up to it myself."

Four days ago, Gunner -- who had taken the reins from interim superintendent Dennis Rectenwald in May -- was considering a leadership position with Oregon Schools, his hometown district.
