For the third time in one week a motorcyclist has died in a crash.
Paul "Chris" Smith, 34, 2100 block of Hull Road, died late Friday in a three-vehicle crash at Ohio 4 and Bogart Road. A passenger on the bike, Monica Ohlemacher, 42, 2100 block of Karl Ann Drive, Sandusky, was seriously injured.
She remained in critical condition Saturday night in an intensive care unit at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.
Vehicles filled the lawn and driveway outside Smith's home Saturday afternoon. Inside the garage sat his loved ones trying to cope with his untimely death. His wife, Kendra James-Smith, was visibly upset and said she was at a loss for words.
She described Ohlemacher as a friend of her husband's and said Smith was on his way home when the crash happened.
He leaves behind his daughter Katelynn, 14, and son Brendenn, 13. James-Smith said she is five months pregnant with their first child together.
Smith died in the helicopter on the way to the hospital, James-Smith said. She added that today is her husband's birthday.
The crash is under investigation although alcohol is believed to have played a role, according to troopers at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Sandusky Post.
At about 11:30 p.m. Larry W. McCready, 70, of Sandusky, was turning his Subaru Forester SUV left onto Bogart Road off of Ohio 4 when he failed to yield for Smith, troopers said.
Smith's bike, a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, struck McCready's vehicle, throwing both riders. Smith and Ohlemacher, along with the bike, landed in a ditch on the west side of the road, troopers said. McCready and a front-seat passenger were not injured.
Flying debris from the wreck hit another vehicle stopped at a red light on Bogart Road. Steven F. Baker, 44, of Bellevue, and two passengers in that vehicle, were uninjured.
Neither Smith nor Ohlemacher were wearing helmets.
Last Sunday, Milan resident Thomas Shaffoe, 62, died when his 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle crashed near a curve on Ohio 13 near Alpine Trail.
In another accident the same day, Timothy Schumacher, 55, Shelby, died when he lost control of his 2000 Harley-Davidson Sportser on the Ohio 2 on-ramp from Ohio 163 in Portage Township.
Funeral arrangments for Smith are being made at David Koch F. Funeral Home in Sandusky. So far no citations have been issued in the crash.
