PERKINS TOWNSHIP

A Sandusky-area motorcyclist died, and his passenger seriously injured, after his motorcycle collided with a car that turned left in front of him late Friday, according to troopers with the Sandusky post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Paul C. Smith, 34, 2105 Hull Road, was northbound on Ohio 4 at about 11:30 p.m. Friday when his motorcycle collided with a Subaru Forester driven by Larry W. McCready, 70, 309 E. Bogart Road. McReady was southbound and turning left onto Bogart Road when he failed to yield to Smith's motorcycle, troopers said. The motorcycle collided with the rear of McCready's Forester and slid north from the crash site into a ditch on the west side of the road.

Smith and his passenger, whose name has not been released pending notification of her family, were taken by medical helicopter to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. The passenger had serious injuries, troopers said.

Debris from the crash struck a Saturn SL stopped for a red light on Bogart Road, east of Ohio 4. None of the three people in that vehicle were injured, although the Saturn was disabled.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal three vehicle crash that occurred on June 13, 2008, at 2330 hours. The crash occurred in the intersection of State Route 4 and Bogart Road in Perkins Township in Erie County.

Driver #1 was Larry W. McCready, 70 years old, 309 E. Bogart Road Sandusky, Ohio was driving a 2006 Subaru Forester. He was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Front seat passenger was Millie McCready, 64 years old, 309 E. Bogart Road Sandusky, Ohio. She was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Mr. McCready's vehicle sustained heavy rear-end damage and was towed from the scene by Walt's Towing.

Driver #2 was Paul C. Smith, 34 years old, 2105 Hull Road Sandusky, Ohio was driving a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered fatal injuries as result of the crash. A female passenger suffered serious injuries and information of her identity will be released once family has been notified. She was not wearing a helmet. Both the driver and the passenger were transported to Toledo St. Vincent's Medical Center by Life Flight. The motorcycle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene by Walt's Towing.

Driver #3 Steven F. Baker, 55 years old, 8203 Strecker Road Bellevue, Ohio was driving a 2002 Saturn SL. Passengers in the vehicle were front seat passenger Kara F. Baker, 21 years old, and rear seat passenger Kelly J. Baker, 17 years old, of the same address. All were wearing seatbelts and none were injured.

Mr. McCready was traveling southbound on State Route 4 north of Bogart Road. Mr. Smith was traveling northbound on State Route 4 south of Bogart Road. Mr. Baker was stopped at the red light of Bogart Road east of State Route 4. Mr. McCready was turning left onto Bogart Road and failed to yield for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith's motorcycle struck Mr. McCready's vehicle in the intersection of State Route 4 and Bogart Road. Flying debris from the impact struck Mr. Baker's vehicle causing disabling damage to the vehicle. Mr. Smith's motorcycle continued north on its side, ejecting both riders. Both occupants of the motorcycle and the motorcycle came to rest off the west side of the road in the ditch.
