Led by three record-breaking individual champions and two runnerups, the Perkins Pirates boys track team was crowned the Division II state champions Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University at the 101st OHSAA state track championships.
Perkins scored 48 total points, which was 8.5 points ahead of second place Eastwood (39.5).
It is the first team title for the Pirates since 1984 and also the first area school to win a team title at the OHSAA track championships since Edison accomplished the feat back in 2002.
Senior Cory Leslie won the 800 run with a state meet record time of 1 minute, 50.77 seconds and also won the 1600 run by a full six seconds, finishing in 4:12.44.
Earlier in the day, junior Kyle Steinhauser took second in the discus with a throw of 180-05.
On Friday, sophomore Matthew Hoty also set a new record in the shot put, winning the title with a toss of 62-00.25.
