In the planning of a memorable visit to Ohio for New Jersey friends, we recently picked-up the 2008 edition of the AAA TourBook. Much to our surprise, Sandusky has listed a second GEM (must see) rated attraction in addition to the incomparable Cedar Point, and it is the Maritime Museum across from Battery Park.
We had the opportunity to experience this delightful family-friendly facility last weekend.
We were impressed with the bright, attractive, interactive displays, and especially with the outstanding film which captures this important city on the Sandusky Bay and its unique history from its earliest days including commercial fishing, ship building, ice harvesting, the Underground Railroad, the local triumphs and tragedies of the sea, just to name a few.
An unexpected feature of the museum Saturday afternoon was an enlightening presentation by the Sandusky Recreation Department which highlighted the many and myriad activities which have been planned for the summer months -- a tourist wonderland!
Our experience was so enjoyable the we highly recommend that the "natives of the north shore" take the time to explore the rich history of Sandusky, as offered by the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, a special gem in a city with so many treasures to offer.
