Thumbs UP for the plan by the National Park Service to ensure the survival of the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. For nearly a century, the granite column has stood as a landmark and a symbol of peaceful neighborliness -- and in these troubled times of fear-thy-neighbor, it's important for that reason alone that it stand at least another century.

Thumbs DOWN to the combination of circumstances -- including tax arrears -- that turned Markley's Restaurant from a downtown standby to a shuttered source of blowing trash. We share the Markley family's hope a buyer can be found to reopen the place and keep the Little Sister part of downtown's family.

Thumbs UP to you, again, for sharing your pictures of the past, helping us preserve those memories for the future. Look for them in the third volume of memories of Erie County and the islands, and know you're a part of this book.

Thumbs DOWN to same old, same old for the new Rattlesnake Creek Bridge. Milan Mayor Robert Bickley is right in saying the replacement for the crumbling bridge ought to be four-lane instead of two, making it easier to expand that stretch of U.S. 250 to four lanes when the need arises -- as we hope it will. But pennies are scarce, and the Ohio Department of Transportation says it's time to maintain, not expand, and so the new bridge will be two lanes, same as the old bridge.

If there's any way to add two more lanes, we hope it can be found. Too narrow a bridge can bottle up the kind of growth we need.
