SANDUSKY

Though its doors are plastered with closed signs and empty dishes sit along its windows, Markley's Restaurant was once a bustling diner.

The restaurant at 160 Wayne St., originally called Whitehouse Restaurant, was founded April 1, 1954, by Sandusky resident Roger Markley and his brother-in-law, Lyle Mayhew. Castalia resident Mike Markley, son of the former owner, says he remembers it as a place where people came together to socialize.

Mike Markley said he remains hopeful someone will purchase the restaurant and keep it open, the way his father intended.
