Hundreds of Erie County residents have lined up to seek government help in keeping a roof over their heads, the head of the local housing authority said Thursday.
Ralph Chamberlain, executive director of the Erie Metropolitan Housing Authority, said his agency opened up the waiting list April 3 for the Section 8 Housing Choice Program, which provides help in paying the rent to about 1,000 low-income families in Erie County. The waiting list will close again May 2.
Applications for the program are taken from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday through May 2 at the housing authority office, 322 Warren Street.
"About 400 came in on the first day," Chamberlain said Thursday during his semiannual report to the Erie County Commissioners.
