House by house and street by street, Tim King and Carrie Whitaker are fighting to prove Erie County is still growing.
The 2010 census is still two years away, but officials at the Erie County Regional Planning Commission, where King is a senior planner and Whitaker is a transportation engineer, say work has to be done now to make sure the count is accurate.
Money is at stake -- and local pride, too.
The Census Bureau estimates that $300 billion a year of government funds is allocated nationally on the basis of the agency's population count.
