Erie County and Ottawa County tourist bureaus have figured it out. Can the rest of us?
They've figured out there's no border worthmentioning, and no need to compete, for the tourist dollar. So instead of trying to promote Erie County over Ottawa County, or vice versa, as a touristdestination, they jointly promote Erie and Ottawa counties.
Someone attracted to one place might, after all, reason that just over the bridge or across the bay, are more places worth visiting. Maybe it spreads the tourism dollar a little thinner, or maybe the double attraction draws more dollars to spread around.
Tourism, you scoff. What about real industries, with real jobs?
Well, what about them?
For one thing, we ought to be looking at ways to transfuse blood into our economic arteries in any way possible.
For another, the people and organizations with whom we entrust the responsibility of bringing the next round of "real jobs" are still acting as if there are borders to guard, turf to protect.
We've been depending on the tourism industry for years. We could learn something from it too.
