After months of preparation, the countdown was tense at NASA Plum Brook Station as the final seconds were announced: "Five, four, three, two, one."

Then the two halves of the upper portion of an Ariane 5 rocket blew apart at 8:25 a.m. Thursday in a big vacuum chamber at NASA Plum Brook Station, demonstrating that the rocket is ready to deploy satellites into orbit.
