BELLEVUE

A rising tide of freezing-cold rainwater nearly drowned a Willard woman who was trapped inside her car Wednesday morning south of Bellevue.

By the time Bellevue firefighters reached 32-year-old Chris Laughlam, she had only a few inches of breathing room left inside her car. The frigid floodwater that came up to Laughlam's chin and kept her trapped inside the vehicle would likely have killed her, authorities said.

"It was to the tip of the roof of the car," said Lt. Brian Putnam of the Bellevue Fire Department. "She had about 6 inches left. It was up to her chin. I can't believe she was still in there."
