What about Chuck?

He enjoys traveling, the outdoors, golfing, gardening and spending time with his family. He also was selected 2007's Erie County Businessperson of the Year by the Erie County Chamber of Commerce.

He is Chuck Stark -- president and chief executive officer of Firelands Regional Medical Center.

Stark, 46, graduated from Duke University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. After he attained his master's degree in health administration from Duke in 1985, Stark's career took him cross country -- from Florida to Texas to Virginia.

Before coming to Firelands, Stark was senior vice president of Healthsouth's acute care hospitals in Alabama and Florida. In 2004, he packed up his bags and moved his family from the warm climate of Birmingham, Ala., to the cooler North Coast.

Since then, Stark has joined several community organizations and serves on several boards including the Norwalk Area Health Services Board, Stein Hospice Services, Healthcare Executives Association of Northeast Ohio and the Erie County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Stark has overseen many programs, partnerships and projects at Firelands Regional Medical Center and has several goals he would like to see fulfilled within the next few years.

Q: So Chuck, are there any more expansion or improvement plans on the table? If so, what are they?

A: We're in the middle of the $146.9 million construction project that is expected (to be) complete in mid-2008. In fact, the new patient tower will open in March, and then the rest of the construction finishes at the end of June, maybe at the end of July. After that, I think you're going to see us kind of take some time to acclimate to the new facilities here at the hospital. We are looking at developing some additional facilities within the Sandusky community and the outlying area in response to identified needs. But that will require more discussion with the board and final approval before we would do that.
