The Dec. 28 Register reported the Erie County Commissioners acted to approve Barnes Nursery's application to divert food waste from the Erie County Landfill to Barnes' composting facility. The Chamber's Board of Directors wishes to commend the commissioners.

The Chamber of Commerce did, in fact, communicate a request to the commissioners to grant this waiver to Barnes Nursery. We've known the company to be on the cutting edge of this type of technology, as they have demonstrated a willingness to put time and resources on the line to develop technology over the years. This particular technology has the promise of jobs, alternative energy resource development, and the provision of a service to area restaurants, hotels and grocery stores.

We know the Erie County Commissioners have specific concerns and responsibilities for the future of the Erie County Landfill, but we believe they have acted in a forward-thinking manner of this project. We commend them for so doing. We are pleased the county is willing to allow a local company to develop this technology and a new service to the area. It's the right signal to send.

John Moldovan,

Director, Erie County
