Pastors Curtis A. Brown and John M. Stovall might be what some call kindred spirits. And the two men say that spirit is rooted in God.

"The Lord has just been good to us," Brown said. "God put us together, and I'm sure of that."

Brown, 82, and Stovall, 84, are both retiring Sunday after serving Ebenezer Baptist Church on Pierce Street for more than 40 years apiece.

Stovall has ministered as assistant to the pastor for 48 years and has been a church member for 72 years, since his baptism there in 1935.

Brown, as senior pastor, has served more than 41 years after moving from Omaha, Neb. An Oklahoma native, he became pastor of Ebenezer in 1966 shortly after preaching at a revival at the church.

"We've been a team ever since," Brown said.
