More than a few bricks will fall from the Apex building as workers prepare to demolish at least part of the structure.
Demolition is scheduled to begin next Monday or Tuesday.
"Once we start swinging the excavators it'll be on the ground at the end of the day," said Guy Selvey of Selvey's Dirt Work Ltd.
According to engineering director Kathy McKillips, Selvey's Dirt Work Ltd. took out a permit Nov. 9 the for demolition at 1643 First St., the Apex property. In early August, bricks toppled from the building's facade, likely because of years of wind and water damage.
The property is owned by Famous Supply of Akron.
Economic development specialist Scott Schell said only the front portion of the building, closest to First Street, will be demolished next week.
"I might go down to see it," said Howard Nemitz, 94, who worked at the factory machine shop for25 years.
"I really enjoyed every minute of it when I worked there," he said.
Since the factory closed its doors 50 years ago, former employees have gathered to remember the days they spent at Apex. This year was their last reunion.
The remainder of this week will be spent getting portions of building sealed off and prepared, Selvey said. The salable materials, such as steel and wiring, also must be removed before any demolition work can begin.
What lies ahead for the property remains to be sorted from the rubble. Famous Supply could not be reached for comment.
"I haven't heard anything," Schell said.
Selvey said this is the first demolition the company has done in the downtown. He said they are looking at other sites, but can't mention them by name yet.
