Wispy blades of green grass sprout from the small backyard of a home on the 1400 block of Wayne St. It is a site to behold for Denise Flugga.
Just to see the grass represents seven hours of her sweat and blood. Her hands are cut up, a result of pulling out of the yard four truckloads of brush and throwing away another three truckloads of trash.
But there is a lot more to be done.
In August, Flugga started Huron Custodial Services, a cleaning business that takes care of the interior and exterior of any home or property. She specializes in cleaning vacant homes for absent homeowners.
Flugga, who grew up in Sandusky, remembers better days in the city with beautiful homes in which homeowners took pride. She said seeing rundown homes is hurtful.
“I see property values going down,” she said. “Just getting in and cleaning the home can make a major difference.”
Her journey into cleaning started when a friend of Flugga asked if she could clean her home while she was away on vacation.
“She was a bit of a hoarder,” Flugga said. “I said, ‘Oh my God, let me get in there.’”
On Friday morning Flugga was back at the home on Wayne Street, this time supervising a crew with a backhoe that is tearing down both wood and chain link fences as well as pulling a neglected pool out of the ground.
“They will fill that in with dirt and then in the spring I will come back and seed it with grass,” Flugga said.
“That property is beautiful. It just needed to be cleaned up.”
About half of her clients are senior citizens.
“I can give them a helping hand,” Flugga said. “It is satisfying.”
