In response to Jami Camp's letter regarding the Maritime Museum of Sandusky's Big Splash Raffle, the Raffle was never intended to be a family event. In fact, the official rules printed on the back of the raffle ticket clearly state that you must be 18 years or older to enter the raffle area. This is not due to the sale of alcohol (for which you must be 21 years of age) but due to the gambling taking place within the designated area. In previous years, when the event security was left to a private firm, this rule was not enforced and we received many complaints from ticket holders concerning unruly children.

Throughout the year, the Maritime Museum sponsors and cosponsors many family events including May Days, Bay Days, Boo at the Bay, Nautical Christmas Crafts for Kids and the Arctic Ice Festival. However, it is the adult events, such as the Big Splash Raffle and the Toast of Ohio Wine Festival, that generate the revenue to make these other events possible.

More than 3,000 people attended the Big Splash Raffle making it a successful event. The support of the ticket buyers and the community is greatly appreciated.
