It wasn't until recently that I learned who the "real stars of the fair" really are. It's the countless volunteers who serve on the fair board, as advisors to 4-H clubs, directors and others who pour out their hearts to make it all happen.
Growing up our family always visited county fairs and enjoyed visiting the animals, eating the great food and experiencing the events like tractor pulls and demo derbies that we only find at the fair. As an adult, my husband and I have carried on that tradition enjoying the fair's festivities with our children as they grow up. There is an excitement that comes to town when fair opens.
My daughter participated in the fair with her horse both last year and this year. She is off to college now and 4-H is behind us; but our hard work and effort made a big difference in our lives.
One of my daughter's advisers, Wendy Kaufman, tailered our horse countless times throughout the year back and forth to the fairgrounds so my daughter and her horse could familiarize themselves with the fairgrounds. Wendy and many others like her, spent countless hours mentoring and educating our children, no to mention the sleepless nights these volunteers have making it all happen during fair week.
I am grateful my daughter participated in the fair. From here forward when we visit the fair, we will see it much differently!
