Tim and Gloria Smith are building a new, nearly $2 million McDonald's restaurant just a few doors down from the current location on Milan Road.

Building and zoning permits to construct the fast-food restaurant were approved last week, co-owner Tim Smith said Monday.

Demolition began Monday on the former Dickey's Barbecue Pit, where the new restaurant will be constructed. Tearing down Dickey's will take about a week and construction will begin shortly afterward on a more modern McDonald's. The restaurant, which will be able to seat up to 90 customers, is slated to open Dec. 1.

The McDonalds at 4104 Milan Road will continue to operate until the new location opens at the end of the year. The current McDonald's is a 31-year-old structure originally built without a drive-in, Smith said.

Smith, along with his wife, Gloria, had been searching for a new site for a few years.

"We'll be better able to serve our customers," Smith said. "It's a more modern building. Traffic on the lot will flow significantly better than our previous lot. It's a much better location."

The new location will have multiple entrances into the lot including one that connects to its neighbor, Best Buy.

The Smiths also own four other McDonald's in the area. Workers at the current location will transfer to the new restaurant when it opens.

"We're thrilled to be able to go over there," Smith said about the 4204 Milan Road location. "The current employees are just as excited as we are."
