Welcome to the 2011-12 Erie County Health Assessment, a snapshot of how healthy local people are.
The Erie County Health Department released the report Thursday, along with two other new reports -- one on families with special needs children, the other on local preparedness for emergencies.
Among the findings: Erie County residents drink more than they used to, and they also drink more than most folks in Ohio and in the U.S.
Pete Schade, Erie County's health commissioner, said his agency will use the findings to figure out where it should focus its attention.
Because diabetes is a big problem in Erie County, for instance, the department will step up its diabetes education efforts, Schade said.

They sent out 1,600 surveys, less then half were returned. Out of the 47% that were returned do we know the percentage that told the truth?

When you have the high percentage of government-subsidized people like you see around here who spend their welfare checks on cheetos and Hohos to eat while sitting in front of their flat screens, what else can you expect?
Our poor are way overweight compared to the rest of the world.
Not sure I buy all this from the Erie County Health Commissioner Peter Schade. Isn't this the guy that just a few months ago with salaries posted he was so grossly out of step with others in Erie County in pay.
Guess for my part I take things at face value including this survery. Tom Jackson the writer of this needs to give a whole lot more detail on the survery and margin of error etc. What is given in this article leaves little to the credibilty of the survey.
I would also be interested in Mr Schade's qualifications as to college degree (s) and from what universities and his certifications etc before I would take what he is saying at more than face value.

there are some people who are a little overweight, some people who are moderately overweight and you have some who are morbidly obese. i don't smoke either. this is all bs.

@Frugalspender, you are wrong, in fact Ohio has the 5th highest rate of smoking in the nation @ 26%, 17th in obesity, and Ohio is 9th in the nation for the number of binge drinkers. I would say that the numbers pretty much say we have a big problem.

Who says you can't still smoke in bars? Excuses must have an exemption from the State or something. Every time I go in there most of their patrons are smoking. Even the employees smoke in the bar.
