Officer was trying to question pair when shots fired

SANDUSKY

A man shot a female companion before turning the gun on himself as an officer questioned them late Friday in Lions Park, according to Sandusky police.

According to a news release, an officer noticed the two sitting along the shoreline at the park, at the end of LaSalle Street off West Monroe Street, at about 10:30 p.m. The officer attempted to question them because the park was closed for the night, police said.

As the officer tried to talk to them, the man shot the woman, then turned the gun on himself.

"(The officer) was at the park apparently on another call," Sandusky police Chief Kim Nuesse said. "He called down to them to find out what they were doing there then this happened."

The officer gave first aid while calling for an ambulance and additional officers. Nuesse said the young adults were transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center. The hospital would not release any information.

As of 1 a.m. today, Nuesse said the two were still alive. She said officers were working to identify them. No further information was available.
