I am descended from a mix of petty criminals and gold seekers. Australia was originally a penal colony. Most Aussies are city dwellers, as was I. It is now difficult to own a firearm there which, incidentally, hasn't helped the crime rate. I was unfamiliar with and leery of guns as many are who were not raised in the country. Then I came to this country to marry a hunter!
My husband is descended from pioneers who forged a life against incredible odds. Ingenuity, resourcefulness, persistence and independence were key to survival. Most of the families of Erie County have this proud heritage. Once I realized this I came to understand the passion that so many men in this largely rural community have for their guns. Without firearms their ancestors would have been toast!
The Register's publishing of CCW permit holders is offensive to many gun owners who don't even hold one. The fallout of discrimination against some of the list has already begun.
My point is that it was an extremely shortsighted business call. I sincerely hope that this issue does not result in a large drop in sales. This would hurt the paper's employees, most of whom (my husband is one) had no say in this matter. So please consider this before canceling your subscription or ads. As for the "deciders," please do more extensive research.
This was not a matter that would improve lives.
Anyone can stash a weapon easily on their person or in their purse. Many do. A few actually have permission.
