Neighbors upset by East Madison Street shooting

Gunfire tore through a typically quiet Madison Street neighborhood about 11:35 p.m. Monday night, with at least two bullets striking a family’s home.

After the smoke cleared, officers showed up and plucked two rounds from the yellow siding on a house in the 600 block of E. Madison St.

About 25 minutes later, a motorist pulled into the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s post across town and begged troopers to help him.

Derek Jackson, 41, of Cleveland, steered his rickety red Chevy pickup into the parking lot outside the Patrol’s Fremont Avenue building at about midnight, troopers said.

His pickup had a flat tire — it had been shot out.

Sandusky police arrived and found a handgun in Jackson’s pickup, so they arrested him and charged with him carrying a concealed weapon. Jackson bonded out of the Erie County jail at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

It’s likely at least one of eight shell casings officers recovered from the Madison Street shooting came from Jackson’s gun, Sandusky police Lt. John Orzech said.

Police refused to specify the caliber of weapons involved.

It appears Jackson was shooting in self-defense, Orzech said.

“From what we have right now, it looks like he was the victim of an attempted burglary,” Orzech said. “It looks like the other two men lured him to that spot. That means our suspects are probably familiar with the area.”

At about 11:35 p.m., Madison Street residents reported hearing 10 to 15 gunshots. Janet Hudson and her son, Mark Hudson, live in the home that was struck by two bullets. The bullets lodged into the west side of their home, just above a first-floor window.

The Hudsons were sleeping in upstairs bedrooms at the time.

“I thought it was firecrackers, but then I saw the police lights,” said Mark, who only recently began living at home after a lengthy hospital stay.

Nights in his neighborhood weren’t always so bad, Mark said, but these days there are drug dealers.

“I’m not scared here most of the time,” Mark said. “You know what’s going on out there. You just try to stay focused on the daily routine.”

The Madison Street area hasn’t been afflicted with much gun violence in recent years, although in the last few weeks incidents have gotten out of control, residents said.

On Jan. 4, Ike Harvey was walking near Meigs and Madison streets when a man jumped out of a car and came at him with a knife, a police report said.

“I got you now mother (expletive),” the assailant said as he slashed a 4-inch gash in Harvey’s forearm, according to the report. No one has been arrested in that attack.

Lacy Davis, who lives next to the Hudsons, said vandals slashed he vehicle’s tires Saturday.

There’s no evidence the spate of crimes are linked, police said.

But that’s little solace to residents.

“I don’t understand what’s going on,” Davis said. “First we get our tires slashed, and now people are shooting at each other next door?”

“I’ve been here for 25 years,” she said. “But we’re not going to risk our lives to stay.”

Hard to believe this crap happens next door to the police station and someone has to call them??? Something seriously wrong with this picture. Sandusky is going down the tubes and the NAACP is worried that a few uneducated criminals are possibly being targeted by the cops.

Next door to police station, that should tell you something about the the fear the thugs have for the police.

lor70

God forbid the suspects are black and the police stop and question them!!  You know we don't want to offend anyone!!   Pretty bad when innocent citizens have to be afraid in their own homes and the criminals are crying discrimination and get away with it!!

beepx22

upset? really, just by gun fire, nah i doubt they were actually upset... god i love the register

here in ohio

time for all the good people to move out and just let all the thugs have the city as the way i see it the cops cant do anything about things like this thanks to the NAACP !!!!! GOD i am glad i dont live in that worthless city any more !

What the SPD and the city needs to to is tell the NAACP to get lost and ignore them.  They are not a regulatory agency and have no legal clout anyplace.  Let them file a lawsuit if they wish - who will be their witnesses?  Those who filed complaints???  That will be a joke and a half.  I'm sure some of them won't want to go to court for fear they will be arrested for something in their past.

NAACP needs to get out of the city completely and the SPD needs to go after these criminals full force and don't worry about who is friends with who or what anyone else says.

Everyone is soo worried about stepping on somes toes that nothing ever gets done.  If SPD and the city council AND the new City Manager (whom I didn't see mentioned in this meeting) doesn't take some strong action - the violence will continue to a level where noone but the thugs will live in Sandusky.  Then where will they shop?  Where will they get any supplies?  Where will they live?  Maybe they will just kill each other off.

Did the guy who's truck tire was shot in the gunfire exchange on Madison tell who it was who was shooting at him?  If not - throw the book at him and get his a$$ back in jail by revoking his bond!  Funny he was out in less than a day.  Who bonded him out?  Probably the guys that he claims were shooting at him. How do we even know someone was?  Maybe he shot his own tire to look good.

It's a real shame that the SPD don't stand up for themselves against the thugs.

All of this violent behaviour is going to have a real strain on the tourists.  And when the number of tourists drops, the admission at cedar point will drop - meaning less tax from CP and a domino effect will be higher taxes for the citizens.  However, when the residents start leaving - the domino effect will increase taxes even more on the rest who can't leave.  At some point - it will be cheaper for the whole city to stop working and just start robbing each other.  The police force will be reduced due to budget cuts from loss revenue and there will be control over any of it.

What's the NAACP have to say about this?  They probably like it - they can try to control the whites then and let the thugs take over.

What a poorly written article!  It's all over the place at the beginning!!

Dear NAACP:

The suspects are most likely white and extremely religious. Neatly dressed, clean cut, no tatoos, no priors. They were carrying a concealed weapon for personal protection and have a valid CCL and properly registered weapons.  (Sarcasm intended!)

Yeah, that's it.  The whole truth and nothing but the truth!!

willijo50

The city commision better get a handle on this gun violence if they want to sell Sandusky as a tourist destination, people will avoid the city like a ghetto.

If city residents keep their heads in the sand or plugged in their anal itch, they will eventually end up being complete and total liberal SHEEP!  Ha! Ha!  "You know what is going on out there.  You just try to stay focused on the daily routine."  Talk about total ignorance and acceptance of criminal deviance.  So the premise is, "Nothing can be done so we just IGNORE it and hope for the best???"  Here is a tip for you city residents.  Having a CWP will NOT help you at this point.  All of you have given up on any semblance of living a FREE and prosperous life.  Even if you carry armed in your own home, there is NOTHING you can do to stop any gunshot rounds from hitting your home and wounding or KILLING you or anyone in your family.  NOTHING!!  You will get the proverbial, "Oops!  Sorry.  You know what is going on out there.  I didn't mean to KILL anyone.  It happens."  For ONCE, why don't you outstanding city residents try and hold people who resort to violence accountable for their decisions and actions?  Instead of accepting the premise of liberal EXCUSES, do something about it!  Or, have you given up and accepted this behavior as the new low standard of city society?  The NAACP is already ahead of the game.  They are way ahead of any residents in doing something and speaking up.  Their liberal agenda is to make EXCUSES and BLAME to prepare for a MURDER trial.  But, at least they are doing something.  What are YOU doing?  It does not matter.  You GET what you vote for.  I had the good fortune to move out of the city and I am grateful to God for it.  Keep paying those city taxes.  I guess being liberal, mind numb, democrack entitlement sheep is more of an epidemical prevalence than I could have ever imagined.

What does the NAACP have to do with this? It's just like any other town...there are whites, blacks, mexicans, you name it. Whites and mexicans are just as capable of acts of violence. Especially in a town like Sandusky, it's not uncommon to see white and mexican thugs. Leave race out of it!

TuffNutts2011

Now with the police under fire from the NAACP you better believe that they are going to stop being proactive and just respond after these things happen.  From now on everything they do will be after the fact.  There is nothing that says they have to risk their lives trying to stop these things before they happen by making traffic stops and talking with people trying to figure out who the players are.  Now all they will do is just wait till something happens then go to the scene and take pictures.  If you live in Sandusky you might want to move.  Thank you NAACP for stepping on the officers who are actually trying.  You are truly making the city worse by your actions which will be unfounded.  In the mean time the officers are going to shut down.  Thankyou for helping the drug dealers destroy out city.  Thank you very much.  By the way IM BLACK.

@tuffnutts - you are right on the money with that statement.

Those soccer moms sure don't know how to shoot.

Maybe the SPD can hold training along with sensitive sessions requested by the NAACP.

Kudos to TUFFNUTTS, well said.   I wonder if this comment will stay posted.   I keep getting deleted,  strange, I don't say anything any different than everyone else here.   What is it SR?

PussycatPatrol

Mr. Tuffnutts, I am afraid you have hit on a very valid point.  The Pussycat Patrol Is going to have to further investigate this heinous activity going on in Sandusky.   We will not stand for hooliganism in the fine city of Sandusky.  Cheetah (aka Puff)  is firing up our jet at this very moment and we will be flying over the Sandusky area looking for these young ruffians.  Be warned, you lawless scumbags........if we detect you, we will call the police STAT!  We have a direct line on the jet to the police - it's similar to the phone that Batman used to phone the police chief of Gotham City, except ours is purple.  It lights up, too.  Cougar,  Lynx, Tabby, Tiger, Kitten and of course, the illustrious Pussycat Galore now signing off.  Thank you.

trafficman

If these thugs are going to try to shoot each other, maybe they should spend some time at a shooting range. At least that way, they might actually shoot each other!

If the Left-Wingers make guns illegal this won't happen????  This discipline thing---Remember it was mandatory years ago, when I went to school, right there with respect for one another.  Well, it's not mandatory anymore in school and heaven forbid if you whip your child and are turned into children services.  We are witnessing the results of years of protecting the Children.  I know many kids were abused in the "old days' and some were actually beaten to death  Is this the results we are seeing??   It has to start with the younger generation.  By the time they reach the ages of most of these guys it is to late, prison doesn't correct the problem and probably makes them worse.

"By the time they reach the ages of most of these guys it is to late, prison doesn't correct the problem and probably makes them worse."

are you serious? hah it's thanks to the liberal minds like your own that we have such issues with these punks! Maybe america should enforce corporal punishment more often than not and such issues like these wouldn't be spiriling out of control like they are now!

I'd just like to say THANKS to you & the rest of the people with your mind set for making the country go down the drain like it is today!

it's pathetic
