How nice to see that finally, here in the 21st century, many future brides and grooms are now announcing their own marriage plans in the newspaper! It certainly seems archaic and "out of it" to see that many parents and stepparents still feel that they have to announce the engagement of their daughters (or worse yet, of their sons). Surely if one is old enough to decide to get married, they should be able to announce it themselves, unless it is an arranged marriage.

This is not to say that the names of the parents shouldn't be mentioned, like maybe after the description of the couple's education and employment information, which also seems to be customary. After all, this is all about the bridal couple.
