All of the area school levies were voted down. With the rising costs of energy, petroleum, consumer goods, and an ever increasing worry of unemployment, of course it was inevitable. Or, that is what we like to tell ourselves. The decision was made, the excuses were decided -- our minds were made up before a fact could be considered.

The fact is, it is the responsibility of the people of this country to fund education. What other modern nation gives decentralized local politics such options, right? Education is not a privilege in this society, it is a right.

Your reasons aside, unfortunately, we'll have to tell the children around you that the commitment previous generations made to your education have been given up for theirs. How will we explain this? Perhaps tomorrow you can tell them you have to spend $3.19 a gallon to fill your SUVs and $3.50 to fill your coffee cup; therefore you just cannot afford to think about the future.
