50 years ago, 1957: Thirty-eight boys were waiting for a sponsor to enter them in the 1957 Sandusky Soap Box Derby to be held July 21. Otherwise plans for the current derby were moving along nicely.

25 years ago, 1982: Financial problems stopped a $22 million race track scheduled to be built at the corner of Ohio 4 and Strub Road. In January approval of a 20-year loan came from a Toledo lending institution. Once the $15 million loan was finalized and the papers were signed, a New York firm was going to sell stocks at $2 million a share to corporations. But nothing else happened. "It's still alive," said Eddie Solomon, president of Track Enterprises, "we're right where we were before."

10 years ago, 1997: Margaretta school board members got part of their wish granted May 6, with voters approving the district's 1.5-mill replacement levy, but a 6.5-mill additional general expenses levy was defeated.
