Health officials are mounting a defense in Erie County against a possible horde of masked invaders -- raccoons suffering from rabies.

Erie County Health Commissioner Pete Schade said the state health department has forecast that raccoons with rabies will arrive in Erie County from the east by 2009.

If sick animals do show up in Erie County, Schade hopes to protect local families by inoculating as many family pets as possible against rabies. A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic for pets was held last year in cooperation with the Erie County dog warden, and another clinic is planned this year.
