Old houses in Erie County, particularly Sandusky, pose a continuing threat of lead paint poisoning for small children.
That's why Erie County hopes to land a $3.8 million grant to remove lead paint from dozens of local homes and take other steps to protect children.
"Our housing stock in Erie County is a little bit older than both the state and national average," Senior Planner Tim King told the Erie County Commissioners Thursday. Commissioners Nancy McKeen and Bill Monaghan voted 2-0 to give King permission to seek the federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Older houses tend to have lead-based paint, and the paint chips pose a threat to young children who tend to put everything in their mouths.
