Clyde wrestlers beat Sandusky with bonus points

Fandy.com Staff • Jan 6, 2011 at 8:22 AM

Sandusky won eight of the 14 weightclasses against Clyde in a tri-match with Fremont Ross, but the Fliers edged the Blue Streaks on bonus points, 34-27.

Five of the Fliers' six wins were worth the full six points (four pins and a forfeit) and the seventh was a major decision for four points. Five of Sandusky's wins were decisions (three points).

"We know how to win those points," Sandusky coach Casey Harrington said. "Not getting pinned, getting a major decision (four points) instead of a decision (three). We're working on it. We're going to go back to the room to fix those mistakes."

Clyde rolled through their match with Fremont Ross for a 46-21 win. Still, Fliers coach Rob Jennings wasn't satisfied with merely the two dual wins.

"I guess, overall, what stuck out to me were the mistakes we continue to make as we get into the meat of our schedule here," he said. "(The mistakes are the) little things we continue to work on in practice. We need to carry it over to the matches. In the heat of the moment, you try to do too many things at one time."

Clyde heavyweight Trevor Strickland went 2-0, with a 10-0 major decision over Sandusky's Mike Brown and a pin of the Giants' Jaleal Johnson in 1:44. Fliers 215 Billy Ward notched first-round pins against Sandusky's L.J. Webb (1:38) and the Giants' Dee Bell (1:15). Freshman Beau Minnick (103) also had two wins for the Fliers. Brad Smith (171) and Casey Flores (135) went 2-0, each taking a match by forfeit.

Sandusky's Isaiah Brown, Gene Porter, Justin Palma and Brandon Torres went 2-0 in the tri-match, while Justin Ritchie went 2-0, one by forfeit. Palma recorded two first-round pins.

"We're still coming back from Christmas break, and a very tough tournament at the (Medina Invitational Tournament)," Harrington said. "We're recovering mentally, not physically. Mentally, we're try to regroup from some of the losses down there."

The coaching staff and wrestlers work well together, he said. "We'll fix it and find a way to win the conference. The first goal -- beating Perkins -- we didn't meet, but we're 1-0 against the conference."
