NEW WASHINGTON — St. Paul split with South Central and Buckeye Central Tuesday in triangular wrestling action.
The Flyers beat Buckeye Central 43-24 and lost to the Trojans 40-27.
Winning twice for St. Paul were Matt Stroud at 103 pounds, Jesse Gross 112, Caleb Meyer 171 and Isaac Livengood 215.
Stroud posted a pin, while Livengood recorded a pin and 5-2 victory.
Going 1-1 for the Flyers were Logan Jaworski at 119, Lewis Ott 140, Pete Jenkins 145, Aidan Cole 152 and Mitchell Gross 189.
Jaworski and Ott both notched wins, while Jenkins and Cole each gained pins.
Jason Duffey at 125 dropped two matches, while Kevin Rospert and Cory Bober 285 each lost once.
“I wasn’t happy with our aggressiveness,’’ Flyers coach Pat Welfle said. “Isaac had a good night. He did a nice job.”
South Central also dropped a 36-34 decision to Buckeye Central. For the Trojans, Dylan Blanton at 130, Caleb Barnett 135, Dakota Workman 145 and Shawn Hale (152) each won twice. Joe Gavarette at 103, Corey Coder 119, Alex Knoll 140, Nick Hurst 215 and Rayn Workman 285 all went 1-1 for the Trojans.
“The guys wrestled very aggressively in both matches,’’ South Central coach Ken Johnson said. “We knew we were going to need to get big points (pins) in both matches if we were going to have any chance at wins.
“The guys delivered with seven wins against St. Paul of which five were pins,’’ the coach added. “Against Buckeye Central even though we came up short, we did have more wins than losses on the evening so in our book that was a good evening for us. We can’t say enough good things about their effort as a team tonight. Even though we are somewhat young the guys wrestled above their youth.”
St. Paul is scheduled to compete in the JC Gorman Invitational at Mansfield Friday and Saturday.
“That will be real good competition,’’ Welfle said. “We’re only taking six or seven of our veterans. We hope that kids do place. Mitchell won his weight class, 171, last year.’’
South Central goes to Saturday’s Plymouth Invitational.
