Three more distance relay teams earned their respective spots at next week’s state track and field championships by placing in the top four at Thursday’s Division II regional meet at Lexington High School.
In boys action, the Huron 4x800 team of Ryan VanCauwenbergh, Kevin Tomczyk, Danzell Harris and Spencer Maddox took third in 8:04.76. The time was also a new program record at Huron.
Behind them in fourth place was Edison’s team of Lucas Wallace, Mike Biltz, Chris Hoffman and Clay Goodwin in 8:07.25.
In the girls 4x800, Edison’s team of Cassidy Pierce, Tori Stallkamp, Kristin McCarthy and Madison Moyer took third in 9:47.21.
Also on Thursday, the area took 1-2 in the girls high jump. Clyde’s Paula Wollenslegel won the event with a jump of 5-feet-5, while Vermilions’ Hannah Bartlome was second at 5-4.
Area competitors also took the top two spots in the boys long jump. Edison’s Brandon Cushler (21-feet-10) took first, while Perkins’ Cameron Burrows (21-6.5) was second.
Also qualifying for state from the area Thursday was Huron’s Zach Harkey, who took third in the discus with a throw of 156-feet-11. Port Clinton’s Morissa Mallory was second in the girls shot put with an effort of 40-feet-1.
