Six of the 12 players advancing to the second day of the Port Clinton district tournament -- Ashley LaFountain, Chelsea Beck, Aubrey Gillman, Samantha Griffin, Jaclynn Hipp and Olivia Kasten -- played with Pat Ortner, the long-time tennis pro at Baywinds Athletic Club. He passed away unexpectedly in February.
"(Ashley) would hit with me a bit as a young girl, but I'm basically a ball feeder, a high school coach," said Rick LaFountain, Ashley's father and coach at Oak Harbor. "(Ortner) taught her strategy, strokes and the right way to do things. For a lot of high school coaches ... we're okay in the beginning, but it doesn't take it long for the players to develop past what we can teach them.
At least two area doubles teams have earned a trip to Columbus for the state tournament.
