Perkins softball wrapped up sole possession Sandusky Bay Conference title on Thursday as the Pirates finished off Margaretta, 9-1.
"It's always good to win the title," Perkins coach Matt Meade said. "I'm really happy with the way the kids performed this year.
"We knew we had the ability to win the conference. We expected to be in it, and we're happy to win it."
The Pirates led 9-1 with two out in the top of the fifth on Monday in Castalia when severe weather forced them to postpone two and a half innings. They resumed the game in Perkins Township. With the win, Perkins (20-9, 12-2 SBC) ended Edison's (22-7, 11-3) hopes of a share of the SBC. Perkins has won the conference five times in the last six years, sharing the title only once: In 2008, they split the conference with Division II state semifinalist Clyde.
Against the Polar Bears, Kelsey Yaratch was 3-of-4 batting with two runs scored. Cecily Bradley and Kelsey Vaughn recorded two hits each. Shannon Matso and Lanie McCune each drove in a pair of RBIs.
Vaughn stole two bases, tying Perkins' school record for steals in a season with 19.
Daniel, a Perkins sophomore, struck out 13 and walked four. Margaretta's run was unearned.
Perkins scored a run in the top of the first inning and held a 1-0 advantage until Margaretta tied it in the bottom of the fourth. The Pirates responded with eight runs in the top of the fifth inning.
After finishing 25-2 in 2010, the Pirates beefed up their schedule in 2011, adding powers Elyria and the LaGrange Keystone tournament, where they faced the likes of Hudson and Midview.
