Huron, Oak Harbor tie in SBC girls soccer match

After falling behind early, Huron's girls soccer team came back to tie Oak Harbor 1-1 in the last minute of a Sandusky Bay Conference match Wednesday.

Oak Harbor has won the SBC title every year since 2008, but in the last two seasons Huron has been the only league team to beat the Rockets (2-0, Sept. 26, 2012) and tie them (0-0, Aug. 31, 2013).

Oak Harbor (1-1-2, 1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in Wednesday's game with a goal just under three minutes into the game.

Monika Giardina came up with the tying goal for Huron (2-0-1, 1-0-1) with 30 seconds to go in the game.

Huron outshot Oak Harbor 15-11, as Audra Wisehart came up with 10 saves for the Tigers and Ivy Martin had 14 for the Rockets.

Oak Harbor hosts Clyde on Tuesday, while the Tigers return to action Wednesday at Norwalk.


St. Mary CC 171, Fremont St. Joseph CC 208

At Fremont, the Panthers bested the Crimson Streaks in a Wednesday Sandusky River League match at the Fremont Country Club.

Dario Mormina and Scott Doyle each carded low rounds of 42 for SMCC (6-2, 4-1), while Collin Crooks fired a 43 and Chace Rotsinger a 44.

Collin Spader’s 47 paced SJCC.

The Panthers will return to SRL action today when they travel to Seneca Hills Golf Club in Tiffin to face New Riegel.

Norwalk 160, Willard 180

At Willard, the Truckers remained unbeaten in the Northern Ohio League boys’ golf race after a over the Crimson Flashes at Willard Golf Club Tuesday.

The Truckers (4-0) in the league are slated to play at Bellevue Tuesday and host the Redmen Wednesday.

Against the Flashes, Chase Hicks led Norwalk with a 38.

Max Berry and Zach McGuckin each shot a 40, Travis Cring and Trenton Sheldon 42 apiece and Braden Nunez 45.

“It was a real good day for us top to bottom,’’ Truckers coach Wes Douglas said.

Carson Ebert and Brandon Wilson both carded a 43, Aaron Feltner 44 and Alec Gardner 50 for the Flashes.

Bellevue 156, Shelby 176

At Shelby C.C., Bellevue (6-0) defeated the Whippets in Northern Ohio Conference action Wednesday.

Tom Hosang, Issac Hartley and Thomas Pressler led the Redmen with 2-under-par 38s, while Dylan DeWitt added a 42.

Shelby (2-4) was led by Matthew Hiatt and Dalton Boyce with 43s, while Brock Kehres shot a 44 and Ben Murray carded a 46.

Boyce had a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth hole for the Whippets.


Huron 159, Edison 186

At Thunderbird South, the Tigers were again sharp in an SBC dual win over host Edison.

For the Tigers, Kylie Greulich shot a 38, followed by Ashton Sadler (39), Allie Lenyo (39) and Julia Hippely (43).

It is the best round by a Huron team since the 2012 season.

For Edison, Chelsey Rankin fired a 45, while Mackenzie Butler, Jacque Butler and Shelby Zeiter each shot 47s.

Perkins 186, Oak Harbor 212

At Oak Harbor, the Pirates bested the Rockets in a Wednesday Sandusky Bay Conference dual match at the Oak Harbor Golf Club.

Hannah Weatherly led Perkins (3-2) with a personal best 43, followed by Megan Myers (46), Abby Pitts (47) and Taylor Cammellari (50).

Tori Shiets' 50 paced Oak Harbor (3-3), while Danielle Franck shot a 50, Brooke Tice a 53 and Katie Tack shot a 57.

Norwalk 208, Madison 235

At The Woods at Possum Run, Norwalk's girls golf team defeated Manfield Madison 208-235 in non-conference action Wednesday.

Addie Mannino led the Truckers (3-4) with a season-best 47, while Dominique Workley and Tanner Radcliffe both shot 52s and Ryan Kirk added a 57.

"It was nice to go on the road and pick up a win on a tricky course like the Woods," Norwalk coach Don Nardecchia said. "The greens were the slowest we've seen all season and we just did not adjust our putting soon enough. But a young team needs to learn those things and that is why playing other courses will make us a better team."

The Truckers return to action today against Huron.


Huron 4, Sandusky 1

At Sandusky, the Tigers topped the Blue Streaks (0-6) in a Wednesday non-league match.

In No. 1 singles, Huron’s Elizabeth Mills beat Heidi Shipley, 6-0, 6-0, while Colleen Allen bested Mary Faulkner, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 and Kelsey Ohm won, 6-0, 6-0, over Sandusky’s Jenna Hofer.

At No. 1 doubles, the Tigers’ duo of Abby Black and Kassie Hamilton won 7-5, 6-1, over Melanie Murray and Lizzie Boissoneault, while Emily Dewey and Franchesca Reiber topped Lupita Yado and Aliyah Lofties, 6-6 (8-6), 10-8, at No. 2.

Norwalk 5, Vermilion 0

At Norwalk, the Truckers swept the Sailors in Wednesday non-conference action,

At first singles, Norwalk’s Lauren Steffanni bested Amanda Aron, 6-0, 6-0, while Jasmine Ashakih earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Fiona Gibbons at No. 2 singles and Brooke Fries was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Lauren Hollars at No. 3.

In doubles play, Anessa Berry and Kaitlyn Stoll won, 6-3, 6-1, for the Truckers (9-1) at No. 1 doubles over Mel McHenry and Emmy Adkins. At No. 2, Caitlen Cameron and Alyssa Tuttle were 6-0, 6-3 winners over Dez Reutter and Lauren Pawlowski.


Port Clinton 5, Oregon Clay 4

At Oregon, Port Clinton edged Oregon Clay 5-4 in non-conference action Wednesday.

Josh Brown scored the Redskins' first goal off an assist from Carter Rumball, while Alex St. Leger scored the second goal off an assist from Ben Heminger. Brown added his second off an assist from Seth Taylor, and his third off an assist from Alec Ochs. Brown assisted Taylor for the final goal.

Port Clinton had seven shots on goal, while Tytan Rumball and Will Mercurio combined for six saves.

The Redskins host Perkins on Wednesday.

Oak Harbor 6, Edison 0

At Oak Harbor, the Rockets (3-1, 2-0) defeated Edison 6-0 Tuesday in Sandusky Bay Conference.

Tyler Bowlick and Liam Hall led the Rockets with two goals each, while Andy Burnette and Nate Poiry each added one.

Poiry had two assists for the hosts, while Hall, Allen Luecke and Tyler Sievert each added an assist.

Kyle Draper had five saves for Oak Harbor.

The Rockets return to action Thursday at Huron.
